I had a really great ongoing discussion with my sidekicks today about what they find attractive about men and what makes them physically attracted to any particular one over any particular other.
The photo is arbitrary; I just pulled it from Flickr. Personally he doesn't do it for me. I like his hat...it's kinda cool. But what's with the losery-looking shorts? I hate shorts, by the way. I don't really agree with them as a matter of course. Also his t-shirt is too big for him and makes him look kinda dumpy. I mean, he probably doesn't care...it looks like he's at some sort of hot sweaty music festival or something and he really just wants to get across to the grandstand so he can see Joe's Band play or whatever. But really the point here is that I don't know anything about him, so how can I possibly find him attractive? Someone did, as evidenced by the tags on this flickr photo.
The Heartwarmer says she knows right away when she sees a man if she is attracted to him. The Starlet says she automatically assumes there will be no requisition of any attraction, so she sort of blocks herself from getting attracted.
Me, I don't know. Clothes aside, I guess this dude is okay. I mean, if he came up to me and struck up a conversation I'd probably talk to him for a little while. He'd have to smile and make a joke though, because that is something I find attractive. He'd have to have a nice voice. He'd have to admit that his shorts are ridiculous. He'd have to be polite and charming and all that. But even that isn't enough.
There's that...je ne sais quoi. Now that's hot.

i used to be one of those who would eye up a guy on the street and immediately accept or shun his "boyfriend/hubby potential" based on his style or looks. now, i'm hardly interested in a guy if he can't hold my attention with more than just a chiseled jaw or expensive taste. he's got to have a sense of humor, be sensitive, caring, helpful, sharing, interesting (and interested in more than just my looks), and have a brain.
i met my boyfriend and love of my life online via an art website where we started out writing elaborate free-style poetry back and forth before we even saw pictures of each other. it was an excellent judge of character and we really got the chance to know each other without all the socially expected restrictions, like style, good looks, taste, etc.
anyway, you brought up some good points.
I didn't think my husband was particularly attractive when I met him. He seemed like a nice guy. But his attractiveness eventually stemmed from his personality and time spent around him. However. Now that I'm an old married bat, I can look at men for their sheer hawtness. And for that, I can't put my finger on it. The last man I ogled was a young Harrison Ford, so go figure. (On a History Channel special about Star Wars. My friend said she didn't think he was sexy. I think she is crazy. Husband once saw him on an NYC street and said he was even sexy in person, and Ed is the straightest man alive).
