I know.

So I moved my blog header to the left (and turned it into a Sailor-Jerry style tattoo). It looks cool, right?

Wouldn't it look cooler if it didn't scroll along with the rest of the blog?

I'm exhausting my Googling prowess trying to figure out how to achieve fixed-header greatness but it doesn't seem to be working so well.

Hello?

Hm.

Anyone still out there? I know it's been a while...but I just posted a bunch of stuff that had been sitting there waiting to be posted. Sorry; I was busy and kept forgetting to do it except when I was on the subway. So enjoy, if you're reading. And if you're not, then you won't see this so I guess it doesn't matter.

Honestly, I don't know what you'd really get out of reading my diary anyway. Some sort of voyeuristic pleasure? Or maybe it's some sort of reassurance that, well, at least you're not me.

Anyway, I think you're weird. But that's why I like you.

Welcome to Miss A's undisclosed location.

Why, you ask? Why did I move my blog from its prime (ha) location?

It's a really long story. One I can't really talk about in any kind of public forum. If you care to know, you will likely have another way of contacting me so you can ask.

It will hopefully move back, but certainly not until this stuff blows over.

Win a free donut!

Funniest donut-related comment/email wins this fabulous prize! This Dunkin Donuts coupon was given to me by the heinous coworker at my current temp job. She thrust it upon me even after I told her three times I do not want a donut.

I'm miserable doing this ridiculous excuse for work, but at least I get to entertain myself with blogging and facebook while waiting for a movie job to open up.

If you win I'll send the coupon by mail. It does require that you buy a cup of coffee, but I'm trying to start an anti-Starbucks movement, so I'm happy to encourage you to purchase a cheaper, better cup from DD.

I know my little prize is kinda lame, but at least having a contest
for a donut is kind of funny. Please help me amuse myself during this trying time of having to do stupidly easy work to stay afloat during a phase of unemployment!

Film Industry Cojones

I stumbled across this post about The Watchmen on The Ethical Slut (one of my favorite bloggers, you should go read her stuff now). It's about how Fox is engaging in legal war with Warner Bros. over The Watchmen after having passed on it initially. The letter is written by one of the producers, and I wonder if said producer knew that his letter would be taken up as a viral Internet boycott.

As a freelancer, I'm always a little hesitant to put anything "out there" about work...I'm often terrified that work-related people will see and that it will negatively affect my ability to get jobs. I mean, there is something to be said for people wanting to work with you because of who you are (and I'm a pretty cool gal, if I do say so), but people are also insecure. They get especially funny when you say you have a blog; they get all curious to see what you're going to write about them, and sometimes they're really nervous. I don't like that; I'd much rather everyone just relax.

I've been reading some of Polybloggimous lately too, which is prolificallywritten by a Locations fella. Here's a great post he wrote about his experience on a low-budget horror flick. It was funny. It had me giggling knowingly. But he didn't write it until after he'd received a residual check, so you know it's been a while. But in general he doesn't seem to say anything about his shows until after they're over...he maintains the whole veil of "I'm working on a movie but I won't tell you what or where or anything."

Not that I'd go leaking info about my jobs all over my blog or anything (hey, I worked on Top Model and I didn't leak any information at all). I know there's a line. So how much sharing is oversharing? Am I allowed to say I saw a very famous twin getting out of a trailer on the set of some movie I worked on? (More importantly, does anyone really care?) Is it okay to say complimentary things but not uncomplimentary things? I can tell you that Catherine Zeta-Jones is really beautiful in person and that she's nothing but nice to people at work. I could tell you other things about other people, but that wouldn't be nice.

I think what I'm trying to say is that I just don't like the guessing game, trying to figure out where the line is. My inclination is just to say what I feel, but that isn't always nice and someone might not like it. But if I have to filter, why say anything at all? Why not just prattle on about incidental things that don't really matter?

I want substance though. I started this whole thing so I could have a place to spill my guts and feel what I feel. To my mind, nobody has to read my feelings or care what I feel, so I should just say whatever the hell comes to my mind or not write at all, right? Right?

I'm so not convinced.

Stolen Identity!

This ho stole my identity!

I was Miss Adventurous six months before she came around. Just who does she think she is, trying to say SHE's adventurous? She's a kindergarten teacher or something, not a fabulous unemployed moviemaking rock star like me.

I guess I can share. I mean, whatever...they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... If people want to aspire to be just like me then it just goes to show how amazingly cool I am, right?

Right??

I'm 1

Happy New Year!

Miss A has been my blog for a whole year. Awesome!

Here's what happened:
  • I got on my feet with some temp jobs.
  • I got back in the game after leaving JH. It was hard, but good for me.
  • Then I got offered a real job on a real movie!
  • I realized I loved being an office PA.
  • It made me fall in love with New York.
  • And I made lots of new friends.
  • Then I got offered another job, and a promotion!
  • I made more new friends.
  • I belly danced -- a lot!
  • I moved to a better neighborhood with awesome roommates!
  • I got mugged and learned a valuable lesson.
  • I started a brunch club.
  • I got a nephew. :)
  • I decided to really try hard for this AD thing.
  • I got canned. It sucked.
  • But I started running again!
And now I have come full circle. It's a new year and I have no job. Luckily though this time I have lots of friends, a nice place to live, a small but positive professional reputation, and--most important of all--a new goal! I'm applying for the DGA Training Program and in the meantime I'm hoping to get some set PA gigs to start logging hours toward my AD card.

New year, new adventures! Ready?

Tell me why Brooklyn is so damn cool.

F-ed in Park Slope is gathering reasons why Brooklyn is great. Go see! Write your own!

Mine: Brooklyn is awesome because we have the most reliable subway line in New York! Sure, the Franklin Avenue Shuttle doesn't take you anywhere you really need to go, but at least it will get you there on time!

Everywhere but here

I have been writing blog posts, I swear!

It's just that I have been writing them everywhere but on the blog. I've been writing on scrap papers! I've been writing in my iPhone notepad (3G, bitches)! I've been writing in a notebook! I've been writing rather prolifically too.... but for some reason the writing doesn't make it this far. So tonight I decided to write here....

Now back to your regularly scheduled Miss A

Yep. Still thinking about taking the blog down, which is why I'm all "out" now or whatever. I guess I used to refrain from having my identity out there because I had lots of personal private stuff to say. And now that stuff is all safely tucked away in the privacy of somewhere else. So.

I thought about posting another video because it was fun and I was all worked up after the Vice Presidential debates, but then I got caught up doing like a million other things, including reading the debate transcript. Seriously.

Anyway, health care is an issue that has come up a lot for me lately, so I figured I'd say something about it. First, here is what Sarah Palin said tonight:

"[McCain is] proposing a $5000 tax credit for families so that they can get out there and they can purchase their own health care coverage. That's a smart thing to do. That's budget neutral. That doesn't cost the government anything as opposed to Barack Obama's plan to mandate health care coverage and have universal government run program and unless you're pleased with the way the federal government has been running anything lately, I don't think that it's going to be real pleasing for Americans to consider health care being taken over by the feds."

Huh. $5000. That's a lot of money for a lot of families. I wonder, if I was a low-income family that needed a lot more than just health insurance and maybe I wasn't the most fiscally responsible person ever...I wonder, would I spend it on health insurance?

Well I have a little extra money to squirrel away each month. Admittedly I'm not the most fiscally responsible person ever, but I do not spend any of my extra cash on health insurance. I'm a freelancer, and I could probably afford some kind of cheap and terrible health insurance if I joined the Freelancer's Union, but I don't because I have bigger financial fish to fry (like for instance a month of unemployment). And in fact, like I said in my last post, unless I've just been mugged I think I'm an invincible superhero, so I kind of feel like health insurance is just unnecessary. I go to the dentist and pay the dentist. I go to the doctor and pay the doctor. I go to the optometrist and pay the optometrist. It's just as normal to me as can be.

I feel like it is the responsibility of America to take care of Americans, I just do. In my mind there is only one difference between tax credits for privatized health care and socialized health care: money in pockets. And not my pockets, not your pockets....the pockets of the people who run those insurance companies that so notoriously deny nearly every claim that crosses in front of them.

I know it's kind of irresponsible or whatever, but I just cannot get on board with the current system and I feel very strongly that I would rather take my chances than buy into it. I also feel very strongly that if every American decided not to buy into private insurance because we "need" it (they make us need it, we think we need it, whatever) then the system would dissolve and we would have no choice but to be left with a solid public health care system. It would be soooo awesome.

And what difference does it make to me if my money is spent on taxes that pay for health care than on an insurance plan that pays for health care? Here are the differences:

Public: go to any doctor I want
Private: choose from a few specific doctors

Public: it's always the same from day one
Private: if I switch jobs or if my employer/Union switches carriers I could be looking at a major disruption in my life, depending on my medical needs

Public: what you want, they got it.
Private: often doesn't cover specific drugs or procedures. My favorite is when they won't provide birth control. The most common instance is pre-existing conditions.

Public: Deal with a lot of red tape
Private: Deal with a lot of red tape (have you ever had to contest a denied claim? It's a nightmare)

Public: Pay extra money into taxes
Private: Pay extra money out of paycheck

Points and thoughts:

1. Maybe I was too hasty. Maybe Miss Adventurous just needs a change of pace rather than a total meltdown.

2. I might have a job on a really awesome reality show--you've probably watched marathons on VH1.

3. Sarah Palin gave me another present! Let's watch!

YAY! Go hockey mom!

Miss Adventurous is going down

My friends, I think the time is nearing for me to end this tale. I've continued it long past the fulfillment of its purpose, and I'm in a place now where I feel like I need to leave Miss A behind. She helped me rally when I was down and helped me deal with the rough stuff. I've come out of it feeling better for the wear. I still don't totally know who I am, but I think that's okay. I haven't fully self-actualized but I'm on the right road. I used to feel like I was underwater, struggling to come up for air, but now I feel like I'm swimming along with the current, aware of where I'm going and able to redirect if I start heading in the wrong direction.

So thank you guys for listening when I felt like no one was there for me. Thanks for putting up with my continual need to impress myself and others. Thanks for playing along while I figured out some of that big stuff and for giggling along with me at the little stuff.

I'm still planning on making a presence for myself online, but I'm still trying to focus that and figure it out.

On October 4, as an early birthday gift to myself, I'm taking a class to help me focus, which hopefully will be great. So I'm gonna leave Miss A up until at least then. Maybe I won't post anything, maybe I will. I hate big tearful goodbyes though and it's not really my style to give them unless it's some kind of lip service, so there you have it. I'll see y'all around!

xoxo,

kyle the girl

Miss Adventurous is doing fine. Except for the pleather dress she's missing.

Yay, I'm unemployed for a time. Fortunately I can collect unemployment, so I don't feel the need to panic or anything. I don't need to go work in PDF's tanning salon or find a table waiting gig or anything. I'll sustain just fine. Which absolutely does NOT mean I'll be resting on my laurels!

My plans are to write a bit, look for more work, get things done around the house... And also to do my own laundry for once!

Meanwhile my social life is doing just ducky and keeping me busy, which is mostly why I haven't written here much. I'm spending a lot of my time with my friends and less time dating, which is a very good thing. I'm tired of all that stuff and much happier hanging with people who aren't A) only interested in me if they think I'll have sex with them, B) intimidated by my brains and emotional intensity, C) turn me into some googly-eyed, lash-batting retard, or D) all of the above. I like to think that if I continue on this vein of quality friends over "making up for lost time" (which is totally a euphemism for being constantly on the prowl) I'll wind up having a lot more fun.

Also, I keep thinking of shutting down Miss Adventurous and moving to a new blog and a new (less emotionally intense) format. Or I guess what I would do is take Miss A private so I would still have a place to bitch about stuff. I know people read, I have more unique hits per day than ever. But my life has changed a lot since I showed up here in New York nine months ago and this super personal stuff could come up and bite me in the ass sometime. That threat has actually loomed a bit.

I'm thinking a lot about what I want to focus on though. What my next project will be. Miss A has gotten me through the tough part of relocating, but now I'm ready for something bigger and more focused. Something less intense, less diary-like. But what?

The thing I keep coming back to is relationships and sex. I'm terribly fascinated with those two things, relative to one another and also separated. I feel like I have some insight there. I feel like I have something to say about it. I don't know for sure though. I'm uncertain because my current personal situation is not what most would call "successful" in that particular arena, although I feel like rejecting my unhappiness in favor of a new life in pursuit of a new happiness is definitely a success. I'm single and I love the freedom. I'm happy without a partner. I'm irritated only by the social norms that say I oughtn't be happy when single or that my life is somehow incomplete without a man or woman to make it complete.

Also there is a girl wearing pleather skinny pants on the 4 train. She's falling asleep while standing and I can't help but wonder if her pleather pants aren't contributing to her sleepiness by cutting off oxygen to her lower abdomen.

Really I'm just jealous though and I wish I had the stones to wear pleather skinny pants. I'd be much better off in a pleather dress. I used to have a red pleather dress and it looked awesome on me. I wonder what happened to it?

It's probably in that f'ing storage facility in Texas.

Goddammit. That's just one more thing I lost out of this whole hurricane/breakup/getting-screwed-by-buying-a-house-with-someone-I-didn't-marry thing.

In which I bitch about Blogger

Okay, seriously. Why does Blogger not yet have an app for the iPhone?

I know, I know...Google is launching some awesome gPhone or something, so they probably think Steve Jobs is the devil or something, but COME ON. Third party apps have been free and clear for a month! Wordpress has an app...and I've played with it here and there and it's not half bad. It would be so nice to be able to use my iPhone to publish a nice looking entry like this one instead of a funky-formatted mess like this one.

That is all.

Learning how to juggle

We all know Miss A is busy, but nothing compares to how things have been for me lately. For instance, I promised myself I would write about the Sobieski Truth Is Lame party or whatever, but I haven't had time. I promised y'all I would write about the Hipster Socialite, but haven't had the time. I promised myself I'd write a scathing review of the horrible, stupid lame Dark Knight (hear the sarcasm?), but haven't had the time.

And just today someone emailed me and pointed out that I am no longer a production assistant as my blog's tagline says. This is true! I've been meaning to change it....but I haven't had the time!

So which is better? A secret identity or shameless self promotion?

I'm going for the latter, I think. I'm going public. I think.

I have some really fun awesome photos from LMNOP's visit. Should I give up my anonymity and post them up? I mean, it's not like it's that hard to figure out what I look like. And it's not like it's that hard to figure out who I am.

I dunno. What do you think?

Here's a tasty tidbit:
